Black & A Half Podcast Episode #53: Kate Voss

Musician Kate Voss joins today with guest host Jasmine Silvera filling in for Manny. Silas and Jasmine talk to Kate about her musical journey and what lead her to be selected as the winner of the NW Jazz Vocalist of the Year by Earshot Magazine.  She also discusses her primary performances with Sundae + Mr. Goessl, her Duo Specialty jazz act.

About Our Guest

Kate Voss has been a bubbling volcano her entire life. And she’s about to blow you away. She received Special Mention at the Seattle-Kobe Jazz Vocal Queen contest in both 2014 and 2016. After being nominated 2 years in a row, in 2016 she received the esteemed NW Vocalist of the Year Award from Earshot Magazine. For the past 15 years, Seattle has been her home and she’s been politely leaving her mark in artsy corners and creative hubs all over this city. In the early days, her art took form as an actress, director, playwright, songwriter and piano instructor. Seamlessly moving into the music scene with indie bands such as Argo and A Breakthrough in Field Studies to weirdo pop like Mannequin BBQ and The Stevedore to western swing with the Western Bluebirds and a complicated relationship with old/alt country, (Check out Collapsible Rodeo featuring sweet sister harmonies) Voss has done it all. And her favorite is a four letter word in this city: jazz. Kate puts the term (and genre) in perspective with such projects as Sundae + Mr. Goessl and Kate Voss & The Big Boss Band. (Sundae + Mr. Goessl being her vintage-inspired nationally touring duo with husband and guitarist Jason Goessl. )

Black And A Half Podcast #45: HB Radke

This week on Black And A Half, Manny and Silas welcome HB Radke, who played all of the music for Silas’ Parody CD Frozen In Carbonite. HB is a man of many talents and we were able to touch on just a few of those.
About Our Guest: HB Radke
HB Radke has performed for over 45 of his 50 years. A whiz on the trumpet at the age of 6, HB played his first gig with Connie Stevens and Rich Little. With the helpful tutelage of HB’s father, former Harry James lead trumpeter Fred Radke, he started his own big band just a year and a half later.
The HB Radke Orchestra became an instant hit in the Seattle area. Local TV performances ultimately led to command performances for Presidents’ Ronald Reagan and George Bush, as well as numerous national TV shows. As HB grew older so did the band. He studied at the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, and took a side trip into the world of Disco and House music production.

Today HB is an accomplished writer of songs and screenplays. He is a creative content creator of visual and audio media. When he’s not “making a thing” he’s spoiling his Pugs.

Black and A Half Episode 4: Aileen Paron

bah.aileenThis episode of Black & a Half we must got to sit down with singer Scarlet Season (her real name is Aileen Paron).  Aileen is a renaissance woman! Former actor, now singer/songwriter and a volunteer for Rain City Rock Camp for Girls. We got to find all about how Aileen got started, her future projects and we got to geek out with her a bit about superheroes when had her watch the Man of Steel trailer. We also discovered how Manny started a race riot as a kid. This episode was also taped the day after the Newtown tragedy and we did take some time to speak on that. Despite that, it is a very fun episode.

aileen.paron_-185x300About the Guest

Scarlet Season, aka Aileen Paron, is a one-woman show. Wearing the hats of singer, composer, producer, player and more, this multi-instrumentalist crafts dark and dreamy pop-rock rife with seething bass, lush soundscapes, swirling synths, and pretty pianos. Drawing comparisons to Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes, Tori Amos and Florence and the Machine, she invites listeners over to the dark side on her most recent release, “The Taxidermist.” She is currently hard at work on a follow-up album slated for release in Spring 2013. “The Taxidermist” can be purchased at Amazon.com  and iTunes as well as CDBaby.
